About Research Section

All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi was established by an act of Parliament in 1956 with a trinity of mission i.e. excellence in patient care, teaching and training world class professionals, and research.

Medical research is becoming increasingly important given the ever-growing burden of diseases and the urgent need to find new ways to improve the health of the people. For India to become a knowledge economy and a force to reckon with in the world, research and innovation will be the key driver. One of the major objectives of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences is promoting science and research.

Research is a major thrust area at the AIIMS

Faculty, scientists, and postgraduates students are all engaged in clinical and basic science research. The research environment is quite vibrant at the institute. There are at present >600 extramural and intramural funded projects being undertaken by the faculty and scientists at the institute. In addition, there are many investigator initiated non-funded research studies being conducted by the faculty and postgraduates.

The Research Section at AIIMS was established to promote a vibrant research culture in the institute, train faculty, students and scientists in research methodology, and facilitate world class research at the institute. The Research Section is the nodal facilitator point for supporting research at AIIMS. One of the administrative functions is to coordinate the activities of extramural research projects funded by various national/international agencies like ICMR, DST, DBT, CSIR, Ministry of Health & F.W., WHO etc. It is responsible for efficient administration, management of research funds, appointment of research staff, payment and purchase of equipment etc.
